Convenient to downtown. Lots of places within walking distance
Good value for money but needs updated
I really wanted to give a good review here, but...
I stayed at the Tiki Lodge for three nights at the end of April 2016. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The accommodations were clearly old (linens have stains, plumbing had some issues), but overall about what I would expect for the price. During my stay I was very happy with the room and the overall experience. The staff was quick to help with the plumbing issues, which can't really be avoided in a building from the 60s. The area isn't great, but I knew that when I made my reservation and wasn't planning to walk around at night anyway. I might have been more comfortable in the area if I hadn't been traveling alone.
The room itself had a lingering smell, almost like old smoke or cologne, which wasn't really an issue but became irritating by the third day. My only real complaint regarding my stay is that when I returned home I realized that my arms were covered in bed bug bites. The bites can take several days to surface, especially if you haven't been bitten before and so I didn't realize that I had been bitten until after I left. In retrospect, the small stains I noticed on the sheet (which I had assumed were old), were one of the classic signs of bed bugs. I realize that bed bugs can happen anywhere, but spending my first day back quarantining my luggage, ruining my clothes washing them on the hottest setting on my washer and dryer to kill any eggs/live bugs, and going over my suitcase with a fine toothed comb looking for bugs was an extremely unpleasant experience. I called the motel and let them know that I suspected they had a bed bug infestation in my room, and I can only assume that they have started taking the appropriate steps to deal with the infestation, but I would caution anyone staying here to check the sheets and mattress of the bed before settling into a room.
Affordable and clean
It was a nice affordable and clean mom and pop hotel. It was near downtown and Franks diner. Which is cool and has a good breakfast.
Cheap is good
This is a really old-school motel, but it was a) cheap, b) clean and c) had a big room with a king-size bed. Also convenient to downtown and freeway, especially heading to airport (10-12 mins away). Wi-fi was fine (and free). Lobby is a blast from the past, especially the '60s gold armchairs. A family-type restaurant is across the parking lot which I didn't try, but it claims to have city's best hash browns. Lots of fast food within walking distance. Ice machine on ground floor.
A/C was only fair ... fortunately, weather wasn't too hot. No clock in room! Old-fashioned tube-type TV with relatively few channels. Some noise from nearby rail line that runs through the heart of downtown. Bring your own shampoo -- the only toiletry provided is soap.
