Prós: Very friendly staffs, very convenient shuttle bus from the resort to the train station. 24/7 hot spring in room with a great ocean view was perfect! love the breakfast and dinner there! Enjoyed every second during the stay. Will definitely go back next time.
Prós: This was the best travel experience I have had and I’m on my 4th passport. If you want a quiet relaxed professional experience, this is the place. Carlos was responsive with contact on plans and helped with travel plans & info. I’m quite sure Hollywood celebrities don’t get personal professional care like this. Soaking in private onsen overlooking ocean with birds singing is fabulous. Breakfast was super. The small town was perfect.
Contras: Not a thing was wrong...except I’m spoiled for good now
Prós: Reception, warm welcome, food, privacy, private onsen.
Contras: Public indoor onsen room is too small. Public outdoor onsen is too far and the water is too hot.

Prós: Everything was superb.
Prós: Very good food and service.
Prós: Food were great both dinner and breakast . Enormous and delicious as advertise. Car pick up service, nice view,
Contras: Nothing much near the hotel so they should have something entertain in the hotel. There are just karaoke and pingpong table .
Prós: Property location
Prós: The meals, the service and the view from room.
Prós: The outdoor public onsen overseeing the ocean is excellent. Traditional Japanese meals inside the room, big meals with a serving lady present. Friendly staffs.
Contras: Couple free private onsens on the rooftop are quite small and without indoor changing rooms. There's a free private indoor family onsen with an indoor changing room yet without the ocean view. However there're couple onsen suites available at a charge. The overall dining experience was positive and interesting. I just didn't know how to deal with the odour left after having the meals inside the room. I opened the windows to let fresh air in (plus listening to the sound of the wave), only to find myself invited an unpleasant guest, Mr. Mosquito, who disturbed my sleep.
Prós: Very delicious seafoods served in dinner and breakfast.
Contras: Would be better if some room equipped with private hot spring bath.
Contras: I enjoyed its stay comfortable and nice ocean view from my room. Ar for dinner and breakfast dishes are too much. Delishas but too much dishes , then better for adjusting the price. Thank you,
Prós: Top quality seafood and meals served in spacious and comfortable room. Lovely sea view onsen. Excellent omotenashi.
Prós: The staff was exceptional! The English speaking members were incredibly helpful and kind and went far beyond the expected to help us find places to enjoy in the area. The food was wonderful. The setting peaceful and lovely sea views and close to local highlights. So glad we chose the Hotel Hamanoyu. We highly recommend.

Prós: facility and view are amazing!
Contras: Only when we arrived at the hotel, we were told dinner would not be available. Luckily there are couple of good food around the corner. But would be better if we could be informed beforehand. Cos normally all of onsen hotels will have food available.
Prós: The outdoor onsen overlooking the sea was beautiful and pleasant
Prós: The place was absolutely beautiful. The view from our spacious room was spectacular. Comfortable if you don't mind futon beds on the floor. The staff was very friendly but could hardly speak English but we were able to get by.
Contras: No food served at the hotel and if you don't have transportation, there was very little choices; one Chinese noodle place and a Japanese restaurant which we ate at was good.
Prós: The view was excellent.
Prós: The service was beyond excellent. There was always a staff member who could speak enough English with me that I was very comfortable. The onsen baths are amazing. Each one a little different and unique. The food was so fresh and creative and beautiful and delicious. Thank you for a great experience and a window into the Japanese culture.
Contras: I wish the app would have given the option to book dinner on my first night.
Prós: The traditional Ryokan was excellent. We had booked two nights but had to cancel the second night due 6o typhoon Hagibis and they were very accommodating. The place was clean and the hot baths amazing. It's a shame we didn't get more nights here and to enjoy the seafood dinner.
Prós: Room front of the Pacific Ocean Unfortuntly during the Tiphoon Hagibis
Contras: Unfortuntly the staff not speak in English but kindly giro evry request
Prós: Lots of options for onsens, but private and public ones. In particular love the outdoor ones. The food was very good and staffs were very nice and helpful. Definitely good value for money.

Prós: good...location good
Contras: bath water could be a little bit hotter
Prós: Food and hot springs and everything were superb!
Prós: We loved the dinner and breakfast, mainly Japanese mixed with a little western taste. The food was fresh especially the fish. The quality of the food was outstanding and the quantity was sufficient. The onsen, both indoor and outdoor, was excellent. The staff were great. They were friendly, cheerful and informative, and we appreciated their hospitality. Our room was facing the ocean. We arrived at 17:30 and missed the sunset view but were compensated with a stunning sunrise view. We had a morning stroll along the concrete path right below the hotel and the view was magnificent. Highly recommended.
Prós: Everything is perfect. We had a cozy vacation at here.
Prós: They prepare really good breakfast and dinner. It was fantastic and the view from the room was amazing.
Contras: The building is old so the structure of the room was not practical.
Prós: Amazing views from their onsen & great amenities. Stay for more than 1 night! They have a sister resort and you can use their onsen as well. Restaurant was delicious, afternoon tea and pancakes, room and hotel were spotlessly clean and everyone was so nice. I've been to 3 onsens in this area, this is by far the best!
Prós: open air, facing seaside bath
Contras: aged facility
Prós: The free pick-up at the station was smooth and the staff at the ryokan/hotel was very friendly and professional. The view of the ocean from our room was fantastic and the onsen as well, where you could see the ocean. Free drinks (sports drink or tea) offered after the onsen was a nice addition too. The room was big in general and the bedding very comfortable. Also, the afternoon tea included upon arrival was very nice with delicious pancakes.
Contras: All of us (3 Westerners and 1 Japanese native) felt that the breakfast and the dinner was, in fact, terrible and not worth the money we paid. It was said to be a French (fusion-style) course dinner, but nothing we ate even remotely resembled anything French. It was over-cooked fish and dry meat, and a very odd mix of local ingredients and flavours. Like other reviews said, there were indeed many dishes at dinner, but none of them was delicious (not even the sashimi in which we found some bones). The Japanese-style breakfast was also nothing special, the local fish was good but the staff did not introduce any of the food, but simply lit a grill that we did not know what to use for. Comparing with similarly priced ryokans, Kissho Caren did not offer the same standard of cuisine.
Prós: Gorgeous sea view, could see sun rise and "moon road" from room. Elegantly designed hotel. Great onsen, especially the one on the upper floor. Easy/Free access to seaside public onsen with sea just in front! Great food. Excellent spa treatment.
Contras: We took big luggages, difficut to put it on their shuttle when no advance reservation could be made, but the problem is solved on the way back, with helps from staff, and special shuttle arrangement. Took long for dinner (French style, about 2 hours)
Prós: Very attentive staff and fabulous view from the open-air bath. Had access to a private open-air bath -booking in advance needed-.
Contras: Needed to tell to the hotel upon check-in the time of the dinner, then the breakfast and the return bus -also the private bath-. Then, calculated the timetable accordingly.
Contras: Lack of the usual good care and omotenashi from the personnel at check in and common areas. No services for drinks outside the room or restaurant.
Prós: Having been in and around Izu a few times I can confidently say the value for money here was insanely good. You get a nice large room, including mini sento though the big shared one is where you’ll want to go anyway since the view is great. Breakfast, snacks, coffee, and even beer or sports drinks after a hot bath are all included. Bento is also handed out for free on each day for your beach or sightseeing trips. As well as the French or teppanyaki dinner courses each day, ranging around 7 dishes each day. Very nice friendly staff (though as usual knowing a bit of Japanese is recommended).
Contras: There is no direct beach access but there is one close by and you will want to drive to Shirahama beach anyway since it’s so beautiful. No really a downside of the hotel, since it’s a fun 25minute drive and you get a great hotel for trading the commute to the beach.
Prós: The service is excellent! More than we can expect! Onsen is real natural one. Food is awesome! Never had anything better, it was a smart choice to book the dinner and breakfast in the package!
Contras: The room is a little bit bright at night, some windows are the paper shades, not dark enough for sensible sleepers.
Prós: The food is amazing, very abundant in seafood and beautifully presented. Service was exceptional and the hot springs were lovely especially the outdoor rainforest one, being able to book private sessions is a bonus.
Contras: The Ryokan is situated in a somewhat tired and rundown town, there isn’t much to do in the area and the ryokan is right next to the train station so there is no view or grounds to explore.
Prós: The hotel is a little run down, but clean and and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast was nice, but not served in the room.
Contras: There is literally nothing around the hotel. The town is very run down. This is my 3rd time in Japan and we encountered the worst costumer service in Japan, or simply anywhere around the world. We had trouble with our credit card payment, and the lady at the front desk gave us the biggest attitude ever. Her attitude changed 180 degrees in a second, after we tried twice and both failed - from all smiling, bowing, to refuse to say anything to us and it looked like she was genuinely disgusted by us. I'm still shocked till today that someone can do that. It turned out to be their credit card machine's problem, because I made a big purchase right after leaving and it worked perfectly. But even if it is our credit card's problem, NO ONE should never react that way. It was simply unacceptable. People always mention Japanese people have this "fake nice", and this is the first time I experienced it. I did not spend $800 dollar there to receive their attitude like this. It literally ruined my trip to Japan and made me question the entire country as a whole. Because of this experience, I don't plan to go visit Japan in the next couple of years at least.
Prós: the room rate includes hot spring and breakfast& dinner. The breakfast and dinner is absolutely excellent, definitely worth the price. All staffs are extremely friendly and helpful. You can feel that you're warmly welcomed and treated like their family. They prepared everything in detail for you to enjoy the hot spring and stay.
Prós: A bit old but the onsen and sand bath are good
Prós: We had breakfast and dinner and they are authentically Japanese. A unique flavour of Izu. Private onsen in our room and outside our room (have to reserve in advance) was also fantastic. Very friendly and eager to serve and helpful counter and restaurant staff. Nearby is train station. Quite near to Kawazu to watch hanami. 20 minute drive. Can also take train
Contras: Suggestions for Improvements: 1. The wooden disposable chopsticks should be of better quality. They broke easily. 2. Hotel staff should wear mask to protect themselves and guests during this period with coronavirus outbreak.
Prós: The food! I can skip lunch and have only breakfast and dinner here! So many of them and all delicious. Located near Izu-atagawa station.
Contras: Musty smell in room
Prós: Amazing Place, Great Value, Great Onsen !
Prós: The room in the hotel is amazing! Very comfortable and the view out of window is splendid! There are three Onsen places inside of the hotel and everything is well organized. Not very far to the outdoor onsen. And the staff in Hokkawa hotel are very very friendly and nice. They answered my questions very patiently. And when I said I want to withdraw some money from ATM there is a Mister from reception drove me there! (But please note that the Lawson has the ATM doesn’t accept foreign card but the cashier does.) Me and my friend are all very happy with this experience and hope I could return someday!

Prós: Cleanly renovated
Contras: Not exactly the kind of service expected with the price paid. Very kind people but amateurish in the services

As comodidades presentes incluem balcão de recepção 24 horas, armazenamento para bagagem e um elevador. Prós: Comfortable beds. Ocean opposite across dead end road so no traffic. We listened to the waves all night. Buffet dinner and breakfast ok lots of food. Good sashimi and salads. Seafood macaroni good but the chicken dishes a bit ordinary.
Contras: Early dinner 5.30 sharp and breakfast too early at 7 till 7.45. We didn’t arrive for breakfast until 7.39 and hadn’t finished eating by 7.45 but they tried to kick us out on the dot which was unreasonable. Early check out 9am
Prós: View from our room was great. You will have very beautiful view of Izu-Oshima island through the window. Also the quality of the hot spa water was quite remarkable!
Contras: The cleanliness! They have many space to improve in terms of cleanliness. The facility was old and it was a typical Onsen hotel, indeed. But that would never be an excuse for much dust in everywhere.
Prós: Sea-front location, the onsen was good. The swimming pool though small is a bonus.
Contras: The hotel looks quite dated and the room facilities are in need of renovation.
Prós: Mainly picked due to location near to Dive Shop. Bonus is that most (all?) rooms are ocean-facing with balcony, making for a fantastic stay. Dinner and breakfast are buffet-style with a great variety of japanese food. Property has Onsen which is great after diving. We got western-style rooms; forgot to ask if the hotel has japanese-style rooms as well. Rooms were very large and included a sitting area with couches, ensuite, etc. Staff very friendly and helpful, but it helps to know a little bit of japanese (or bring Google Translate).
Contras: No mosquito-screens on the sliding door/window. We enjoyed sleeping with the windows open and listening to the waves instead of aircon and ended up getting a mosquito or two in the room. Facade and some room fittings look like they could do with a bit of a refresh. Buffet-style dinner and breakfast is a bit short; if you enjoy spending time chatting while eating it may seem a little rushed (but you certainly won't go hungry!).
Prós: Good sea view, grand dinner and breakfast
Contras: Sofa was not so clean. There was a pin in main room. All other pins were not having glass in middle. But this pin only has a glass like glittering. Worried whether spy pin camera or just a pin.
Prós: The location was nice, a walking distance from the train station and in front of the sea. The staff was courteous and helpful and the room was comfortable, clean and quite big. The hotel has a nice pool and onsen bath too. It is also convenient because it has one of the only 3 convenience stores of the village (another is in the station and the other one only accessible by car). Finally, the hotel offers a plan with two meals, which provides a good value for the money (they serve a buffet with a lot of variety; the taste was ok). After being there, we found out that the meal plan was also a very good option because almost everything nearby closes early, and there is only a few options to eat at night. Finally, 2 tips to those going to Atagawa-Onsen. For those going by train: we could not find any market and the 2 convenience stores we could reach walking were closed by 5 pm, so if you need anything make sure to check the stores early. Regarding the beach, there is an area of it that is safe to swin and another one (more in the middle of it) in which the sea floor is full of rocks. Ask the life guards where is the safest area to swin and you should be fine (or you can do as many Japanese we saw there doing and enter the sea dressed, with protection garments, or with floaters).
Contras: Things that you should be aware if you are considering this property: 1- Wifi only in the lobby; 2- Cash only, which is quite unusual for a hotel in this age. I was left wondering how people traveling in a large group, staying for a week or so do; do they carry bags full of money to pay for the stay? (to be fair though, apparently other hotels in the area have the same policy). I also did not like that I was not allowed to pay in advance. The reason I was given is that the hotel can only issue a receipt at check-out (??). 3- The hotel is not new and clearly its facilities are not very well kept, they definitely need more care (still, the room we stayed was ok). 4- As other reviewers commented, the hotel has a tight schedule regarding meal and check-out times. The dinning room is too small for all guests to eat at once. Thus, they divide the guests in groups and set fixed times for them to eat. For dinner you have 70 minutes (which is manageable) but for breakfast you only have 45 minutes (and the 1st group starts at 7 am), which is quite short. If you are late, you will probably not have time to eat properly because there will be another group waiting to enter in the room, and they will ask you to leave when your time is up. Regarding check-out time, it is 9:30 am, quite early too. Honestly, it was a little bit difficult to relax with this tight schedule. But, if you manage your expectations and consider the value for money, it is a reasonable place to stay a couple of nights.
